Yellowjackets Earn Split with Wildcats, Drop Series 3-1

March 26th, 2010 by MSUB Athletics For The Retort

Lindsey Trenary picked up her seventh victory of the season in game two for the Montana State Billings Yellowjackets, as they earned a split on the second day of their four game series with Central Washington Sunday afternoon at Fredrick Field. The Yellowjackets dropped to 11-10 overall over the course of the weekend and are now 9-7 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.

In game one, MSUB struggled against Lauren Hadenfeld for the second consecutive day, Hadenfeld threw a no-hitter in game one of yesterday’s doubleheader, recording her second straight shutout in a 9-0 win over the Jackets. MSUB was able to only record three hits against Hadenfeld as she improved her record to 8-1 on the season, fanning four Yellowjackets in the five inning game.

Josie Grotbo took the loss (2-2) after throwing 2 1/3 innings allowing four runs on four hits while walking five. Trenary came in for relief and threw 1 2/3 innings, allowing four earned runs on six hits.

Central scored in the first after bases-loaded walk and then struck for three in the third with a two-run single by Meghan Kopczynski. The lead was more than doubled following a five-run fourth inning in which Central totaled five hits and batted through the lineup.

In the night cap, MSUB was able to overcome a 2-1 deficit in the first inning when Whitney Whittemore took a 2-0 pitch to left field for a two-run bomb that put the Jackets ahead 3-2. MSUB then extended the lead in the top of the seventh as the Wildcats committed three errors in the frame and Stevie Howard knocked in two runs with a single.

The senior duo, along with Amanda Hood combined for six of the Yellowjackets’ seven hits in the second game. Trenary was able to shut down the Wildcats in the bottom half of the seventh to secure the win.

The Yellowjackets currently sit five games behind Central Washington after the weekend series, but will take some time off from conference play to take part in the Mizuno Tournament of Champions in Turlock, Calif. next weekend. The Yellowjackets will return to conference play at home for an eight game home stand starting Friday, April 2, against Saint Martin’s at 1 p.m. at Cenex Stadium.
