Retort Creative Writing Contest Winners

April 19th, 2010 by Various For The Retort

The Retort would like to thank all the students who submitted their creative works for our 2nd Annual Creative Writing Contest. The submissions were of the highest quality, therefore making our decision an extremely hard one to make.

Winner - To The Victors - by Erik P. Rathie

Battle raged and Peace was lost.
Flying far from mortars tossed.
Silvery Wings my enemies grow,
Given release I’ll never know.
Battered, bruised and Tempest tossed.
My comrades sick, and dead, and lost.
Battles’ over and Peace was won.
Through smoking end
Of barreled gun.
Yet shots still ring one by one.
On Tuesdays wet and
Cold and grey.
Or Sundays when
We go to pray.
Battles’ over now today
Though how it ends
I cannot say.

2nd Place - Beauty All Over - by David Omen

I see beauty looking up in the mountains
I see beauty looking down in the valleys

I see beauty looking up in the skies
I see beauty looking down in the rocks

I see beauty looking among the trees
I see beauty looking around in the flowers

I see beauty looking among in the stars
I see beauty looking around in the waters

I see only beauty in people
I hear only beauty from people
I speak only beauty about people
I only do beauty for people

3rd Place - Nature in the Day - by David Omen

When I look at a sunrise
I see my opportunities

When I look at the flowers
I see I’m loved

When I see a mountain
I’m looking at my whole self

When I see a forest
I’m looking at my living self

When I look at the rocks
I see my stable self

When I look at a sunset
I see myself being restored

The Retort encourages everyone to submit any form of literature in the future. You can submit work at msubretort@gmail.com. Be on the lookout for next year’s Creative Writing Contest criteria.
