Mitchell Named GNAC Player of the Week

September 25th, 2009 by MSUB Athletics For The Retort

MSUB men’s soccer junior goalkeeper, Matt Mitchell, was named Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday. It is his first weekly conference honor and second of the season for the Yellowjackets.

Mitchell, a native of Thornton, Colorado, recorded 17 saves as MSUB split a pair of road games last week. He had six saves in a heartbreaking 2-1 overtime loss at sixth-ranked Cal State-Los Angeles and followed with a career-best 11 saves in a 2-0 win at previously unbeaten and regionally ranked Cal Poly Pomona.

He became just the second player in GNAC history to record 10 or more saves in a shutout as Ben Dragavon of Western Washington tallied 15 saves in a 1-0 overtime blanking of Chico State on September 10, 2005.

Mitchell’s 11 saves against CPP tie him for 12th in the school’s record book. For the season, Mitchell is 3-1 with a 0.52 goals against average and 19 saves with two shutouts.

MSUB begins a four game home stand Thursday at 5 pm, versus Colorado State-Pueblo at Yellowjacket Field. This season ALL MSUB home men’s and women’s soccer games will be FREE on the internet with live video and audio as the voice of the Yellowjackets, Ken Adelblue, will have the call.
