Women Still Have the RightNovember 18th, 2011 by Paulina Carrillo Of The Retort Staff I am disgusted with the fact that anyone would ever dare compare abortion with going to class naked. When making the decision to abort, that person knows they are making a very serious and difficult decision. On the other hand, when someone decides to go to class naked, that person is just being vulgar, rude, and disrespectful. When one decides to walk around naked, people cannot just mind their own business and ignore it because of so many reasons, like the fact that children could be around. Ever heard why they are called rated-R movies? However, when it comes to abortion, no one is interfering with anyone. Like I said in my last article, women have the right to abort whenever they want to abort because it is their body. I don’t think anyone would ever wish to have a kid they don’t want, and in this case, actually take the time to take care of themselves and the baby during the nine months of pregnancy. Of course, unless you are Mr. Donnelly. Donnelly claims, “I think new life is more important to focus on then fifty pounds of fat and a month long period.” Right! Go and tell that to the prostitute, the stripper, or the raped 10-year-old. If the prostitute gets pregnant, the baby will obviously be born unhealthy. If the stripper has the baby, her career is ruined. If the 10-year-old has the baby, her life is ruined. If men could get pregnant, abortion clinics would be found on every corner. But oh, right, it’s a baby, a life, so every woman should be forced to either keep it or give it away. That is, if the baby lives. Didn’t you ever think about how unhealthy a baby can be when the mother uses drugs or alcohol? Something I want to correct from Donnelly’s article is his misunderstanding on my stand about women who get pregnant after being raped. According to Donnelly, I stated that all women who go through such an experience should abort. What I actually meant was, why should a woman that does not want the baby of the rapist have to keep it, especially since it is obvious that the kid might be psychologically damaged after discovering that his or her father is a rapist who could care less about his daughter or son. Following up this argument, Donnelly argues that regardless of what type of psychological disorder the child develops, it does not mean the child’s “life is pointless and too miserable to be worth living.” Again, try saying that again when your daughter gets raped by a man who is psychologically damaged. I mean, I am sure those kind of people are really worth having in this planet. Not. Another thing Donnelly claims in his article that really bothers me is his not-so-smooth idea to put words in my mouth. How is stating the fact that having to live with Downs syndrome is not fun and easy an insult to the handicap? So what you are trying to say is that you would be happy to live with Downs syndrome? I mean, everyone knows those kids do not like it. The only reason why they always seem to be so happy is because their brain makes them seem that way. It is like after smoking marijuana, your brain forces you to act a certain way. However, deep inside, most marijuana users are often depressed, hence the reason why they have turned to drugs. These kids often are mistreated and used by their families and other people. When you get old and start needing someone to clean up your bowel movements for you because you can’t move, come back and tell me you’re a happy man. In my opinion, if someone knows they are having a kid that won’t ever get anywhere in life and still actually have it, then that is very cruel. I know for a fact that I would want to see my children succeed, be happy, and do all the other great things that you, as a healthy human being, can do. I am in no way saying that I dislike the mentally disabled in any sort of way. And actually, for your information, I probably know more about kids with Downs syndrome and such than you do. Why? Because I have a mother that works with them every day of the week and tells me how ALL OF THEM are not very happy adults, nor treated right. Also, of course parents love them, I’m not saying they can’t be loved, but for what I’ve seen and know, raising a handicapped child is not easy. Most of the time, it takes over the parents’ lives. So why bear a child when both of you are going to be unhappy? “Most pregnant people weren’t forced to get pregnant.” Another thing Donnelly states. DUH. They are called accidents. Just in case you didn’t know, condoms and birth control pills do not always work. Seriously, women aren’t stupid. Women know that if a man ejaculates inside the female body, the woman has a high chance of becoming pregnant. Don’t you think women would use some sort of protection if they did not want a baby, or ask the man to pull out beforehand? In addition, Donnelly also supports my “abortion is the woman’s decision” stance by stating that if you are going to have sex, “you have to be at least smart enough to use [a condom].” Thank you. If a woman gets pregnant because the man is dumb enough to not know how to put on a condom, why should the woman keep the baby? Or is it also the woman’s duty to check every time if the guy put it on right? What I am trying to say is, if a woman wants the baby, I don’t care, if she does not want the baby, I don’t care, let her do whatever she wants. There is no reason why anyone should stand against abortion, because in some ways, it’s rude. This article originally appeared in The Retort, Volume 4 Issue 5. Copyright © 2011 msubretort.org.
