Great Fair Trade Shop in Downtown Offers Unique Products

December 9th, 2011 by Melinda Wood Of The Retort Staff

Global Village is one of the many unique shops that downtown Billings offers. Located at 2720 3rd Ave. N the store offers one of a kind items such as jewelry, lotions, clothing, and figurines. But the best thing about the Global Village shop is that it is a nonprofit store that sells fair trade items. Fair trade is defined by a trading partnership based on reciprocal dialogue, respect and transparency in international trade. The items are made by low-income farmers and crafts people from all over the world. Millions of fair trade partnerships have changed the lives of low-income people in over 80 countries. The most common goods produced are: coffee, tea, chocolate, jewelry, clothing and house wares. The individuals who participate in fair trade they say that it has helped them to lead better lives, eat healthier, access healthcare and send their children to school.

The store was started in 1987 by three local women who with the help of volunteers started the shop. Since then the shop is overseen by a board of directors and over 40 volunteers who help run the store along with the director and part-time assistant who help run the store and activities.

Through educational events they have strived to bring understanding about the many diverse cultures around the world. One of the many organizations Global Village supports is: Hope for Women, which provides employment to disadvantaged women worldwide. Every woman is paid a sustainable wage as well as provided with safe and healthy working conditions.

Global Village is worth checking out; there stock changes frequently and the prices won’t break your wallet. Plus it’s nice to know that by purchasing the products you are also helping out a great cause.
