Yellowjackets Pounce on Mountain Lions, 91-51, Stanhope Sets RecordNovember 20th, 2009 by MSUB Athletics For The Retort It was a record setting day for sophomore guard, Kalli Stanhope, setting a new school record for three-pointers in a game with eight, as the Montana State Billings women’s basketball team defeated the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs, 91-51. The win gives MSUB its second consecutive season opening win and the 17th consecutive home opener victory, dating back to the 1991-92 season. “I liked the way we started both halves,” said head coach Kevin Woodin. “Our defensive concentration and effort was solid, which was able to ignite our offense. We played very unselfish basketball tonight and we were able to spread the ball around. ” Stanhope finished the game with a career-high 28 points, including 80.0 percent (8-of-10) from behind the arc and 83.3 percent (10-of-12) from the field. She also recorded five boards with two assists and a steal in 28 minutes of work. Her eight three’s were also just one shy of the GNAC single-game record of nine, set last season by Kelsey Burns of Seattle Pacific. “Kalli Stanhope shot the ball very well tonight,” Woodin continued. “She is a great competitor and her teammates did a great job of getting her open.” Also contributing was sophomore Callie Kautzmann, who finished the night with a career-high 24 points, five boards and two steals in 23 minutes of work. Shatell Marquis led the team with 11 assists, while Sarah McNamee finished with 13 points, six assists and three steals. Kayla Ryan had a game-high two blocks to go with her five points. MSUB controlled the game from start to finish as there was only one tie during the game and the lead never changed hands. At 2-2, the Yellowjackets went on a 12-2 run and never looked back. The Yellowjackets finished the first half on a 24-9 run to take a 25 point lead into the half, 47-22. The Yellowjackets shot 44.7 percent (17-38) from the field during the half, including 42.9 percent (9-21) from deep. The ‘Jackets turned the ball over just three times while forcing 13 Mountain Lion turnovers and holding UCCS to 20.0 percent shooting (1-5) from behind the arc. The second half treated the Yellowjackets better than the first, extending the lead coming out of the break to as many as 45 when Kautzmann drained a three at the 15:39 mark. MSUB continued to play well throughout the second, going on to win by the 34 point margin. UCCS (0-1) shot 40.0 percent (22-55) from the field for the game, and were just 3-of-13 from deep (23.1 %). The Mountain Lions were led Mallory Lowe, who had 14 points and seven boards, while Lauren Holm and Caley Fisher both finished with 11 points apiece. For the game, MSUB (1-0) shot 46.1 percent (35-76) from the field and had a blistering 16 three pointers, which was one shy of tying the school record. The Yellowjackets forced 19 turnovers, scoring 25 points from, while turning the ball over just six times. MSUB out rebounded the Mountain Lions 40-39 and scored 38 points in the paint. The Yellowjackets returned to the court on November 18, against the University of Mary as part of a double-header with the men’s team.
